Best places to eat in Winnipeg, according to me.

Winnipeg has an amazing food scene and this is just one more reason why I love living here.  The local restaurants offer eclectic and delicious food for every craving and mood. I put together this list specifically for the upcoming CanWeld Conference being hosted at the RBC convention centre. So I have focused mostly on restaurants downtown, as well as a few of my favourites!

VJ’s Drive In – 170 Main

Arguably, the best burger joint in the city, VJs is home to one of the best Fat Boy burgers you’ll ever try. The fries are out of this world and not only have they received consistently good reviews, but they’ve even ended up in the national press for the quality and quantity of their burgers. For a low cost, quick meal in the truck, you just can’t beat VJ’s if you’re heading through downtown. Bring cash.  It is old school.  No Plastic.

BMC Market – 722 Osborne

This small grocery store was opened a few years ago by a young woman who immigrated from Mexico with her family. Sick of the Americanized Mexican food in the city, she took old family recipes and began serving the most authentic Mexican tacos you’ve ever had. Served daily from a small counter on the side of the store, the only drag with this place is that occasionally the line can go out the door. However, in a matter of minutes, you’ll be scarfing down three of the best tacos you’ve ever tried for just $5. With a variety of ingredients to choose from and the warmth of her smile, this is a far better pick than the standard Taco Bell.

Shawarma Khan – 225 McDermot

If you ever visit Ottawa it’s hard to find a single street in the metro area that doesn’t have four or five shawarma stands on it. As popular as Starbucks and McDonalds, they are thriving business and it’s because they’re so f*#%ing delicious. When Blue Bomber legend Obby Khan opened up this quick-eat treasure, most critics and food bloggers in Winnipeg had low expectations. However, he proved that not only is exceptional on the field, he’s even better in the kitchen. If you’ve never had a shawarma go there now. Even if it’s out of your way.

Deen’s Caribbean Restaurant & Patio – 205 Marion

If you’re a big fan of roti and doubles, Deen’s is worthy of your consideration. The shrimp roti is one of the best things you’ll try all summer and the doubles are addictive. Another place that might take about 10 minutes to get your meal from, they have a great patio area to wait in or eat in if you have some time. If you’re in St. Boniface, check them out.

Carnival Brazilian BBQ 270 Waterfront dr.

This unique BBQ experience will have you leaving wishing you were wearing stretchy pants! Turn your card to green to be served with seasoned beef, lamb, pork, chicken and Brazilian sausage along with Brazilian cheese bread! Come to the Winnipeg exchange to enjoy an authentic Brazilian dining experience.

La Roca 115 Smith St

A premium Mexican lounge serving authentic Mexican dishes that are prepared from scratch each day!  Enjoy the handcrafted food while sampling some of the 40+ tequilas and the best margarita in Winnipeg.

Carbone’s Coal Fired Pizza 260 St. Mary Ave

Carbone’s was developed with one purpose, to bring friends and family together over pizza! The 850⁰ coal oven ensures a crispy crust and sizzling hot, melty cheese.  Not only is the Pizza amazing, check out the coal fire roasted chicken wings!
